Factors Affecting the Service Life of LED Lamps
1. Damage to the Power Supply Module
For LED lighting fixtures, the LED module and the power supply are placed very close within a limited volume. The heat generated by the LED during operation is quite high. Some power supply components are highly sensitive to heat. If the heat dissipation design of the fixture is unreasonable or the quality of the components does not meet the standards, the power supply module will frequently fail during use. The most direct manifestation of power supply module damage is that the fixture cannot be powered on or suddenly goes out during use.
2. Damage to the LED Module
Modern LED fixtures all adopt LED module technology. Through integrated packaging, multiple LED point light sources or LED modules can be combined in a certain quantity and shape to meet the power and type requirements of different fixtures. However, many fixtures have unreasonable heat dissipation structures or defects in the manufacturing process of the LED module, resulting in partial or complete burnout of the LED module after a period of use. The most direct manifestation of LED module damage is a significant decrease in illuminance, the appearance of obvious dark spots in the light spot, or the fixture not lighting up at all.
3. Light Fading
LED lamps have always had the problem of light fading. It refers to the fact that after a period of use, the light intensity of the LED fixture will be lower than the initial light intensity and cannot be restored. The decreased part is called the light fading of the LED. Due to the irreversibility of this problem, it has become a very serious defect of LED fixtures.
The impact of light fading is very serious. It means that after a certain period of use, the studio using these fixtures must add more fixtures or replace the severely faded ones to achieve the previous recording illuminance, greatly increasing the usage and maintenance costs.
4. Color Temperature Drift
Just like light attenuation, color temperature drift is an inevitable issue for LED lamps after long-term use. The color temperature drift we are referring to here does not mean the color temperature drift phenomenon that occurs during the silicone encapsulation of LED chips. Instead, it refers to the significant change in color temperature of LED lamps with poor heat dissipation after a period of use, as the LED chips experience increased light attenuation due to thermal mechanisms. This phenomenon is called color temperature drift rather than color temperature attenuation because the color temperature of the lamps may not only decrease but also increase.
Color temperature drift can cause serious impacts. Due to the varying degrees of color temperature attenuation among different lamps, it leads to inconsistent color temperatures among the lamps, which affects the recording effect of programs.
5. Fan Issues
For some LED lamps that rely on fans for active heat dissipation, the normal operation of the fan is the basis for their long-term stable operation. We often find that the damage to the LED chips or power modules of the lamps is caused by the damage or reduced heat dissipation capacity of the fans after a period of use, which fails to meet the designed heat dissipation standards.
In addition, after several thousand hours of use, the fans of many LED lamps may generate more noise due to dust accumulation, which also seriously affects program production. Dust cleaning is necessary, and in severe cases, fan replacement is required. Therefore, the fan issues of LED lamps not only require manufacturers to select high-quality fans but also require users to regularly clean the dust from the fans to ensure the long-term normal operation of the lamps.
